Tibbetts Elementary 6th Grade

October 1, 2007
Today we met at Tibbetts Jr. High for the first time. We got to meet the students who were quite remarkable. I read Number the Stars and did a book talk but did not do as well as I had liked, but oh well. We then met at the UNM cente for Uma's visit. Her presentation was interesting. It was fantastice to meet an author, she too was remarkable.

WE met at Tibbetts again today and the studetns were quiete thrilled to have us there. We did not do as much today with the students it was more based on literataure cirlces with a quest whom i forgot the name of. Francis and the guest did role playing and included the students to participate which they appeared to have enjoyed. At the park....Francis read a short story that  was interestiang and we did our small literature circle. We each gave input about thoughts of the story and how it comparead to text to text, text to real life and text to real/whole life.

Our class began at Tibbetts on Monday then we went to the library for our class discussion and to present our genres. I did my presentation on picture books and i think it went pretty well. At Tibbetts we read to the group of children and they did their own literature circle but there was not as much conversation going on. Asking them questions was a good way to have them respond but having them communicate with one another is a challenging job.

Its been a week....what did we do? well....we met at Tibbetts again and the students partitipated in their literature circle, the students were not as talkative as I think they could of been. We read two chapters and hopefully next time we can read a little more so that we can complete the book. After Tibbetts we me in the classroom and watched a video. There was at least four people missing so it was quiet plus I was not feeling to good.

Today was a good literature cirlce experience. I read a chapter and we modeled what we wanted students to do during literature circles. This really helped! We met outside and the traffic was a little loud but each student participated and this made our group more fun. Were on chapter 8 now but realized that there are 40 chapter so we had do give the students homework. Each student is to read a chapter and so the next time we meet they will summarize the chapter they read. This strategy will hopefully help us to complete the book. I really enjoyed myself and the students today

Well,...the homework assignment did not go as planned. The students did not read the chapters assigned. Our lit circle went well, the students are just now starting to adapt to the idea of communicating with one another. After class we met at San Juan College for class and students presented their genres and literary elements.
